Our committees are what make us special
UNIQUE FOCUS ON EUROPE
Yale Model United Nations Europe committees focus on tackling issues particularly relevant to Europe—historical and current alike—and encourage delegates to narrow their focus on developing meaningful and creative solutions to the issues they engage with. We have designed the committee experience such that the implications of these extend far beyond the continent, so we also ask delegates to take into consideration all parties affected by their resolutions.
ROOM FOR EVERY DELEGATE
YMUNE structures its committees such that every delegate may participate regardless of experience and background. We strive to make this an educational and engaging experience for all participants alike, because of which our committees vary in size and format. YMUNE provides both more standardized committees of the UN, such as the General Assemblies and Security Council, but also fast-paced and unique organs, whether regional bodies or crisis committees, to be designed by the vision of our secretariat and our directors.
OUR DIRECTORS
YMUNE takes the quality of its committees seriously. To ensure that committees are professionally run, YMUNE employs a rigorous selection process to recruit Yale students with a demonstrated passion for international relations and special knowledge about European affairs as Committee Directors. Many of our Committee Directors are members of the Model United Nations Team at Yale, which is consistently ranked as one of the top MUN teams in the world. All of our Committee Directors also chair committees in Yale Model United Nations’ high school conference on Yale’s campus, one of the biggest and most rigorous MUN conferences in the world.
Organs
GENERAL ASSEMBLIES
The General Assemblies (GAs) are the largest organ in YMUNE but not any less rigorous and intense. They come the closest to simulating a real United Nations committee in terms of their real-life topics, size, and structure; while the large size of the GAs allows for a more beginner-friendly experience, this organ hosts delegates from all kinds of background and experience levels. Thus, the format of the organ requires delegates to conduct thorough research, be an active proponent of their resolutions, and work effectively with other members regardless of their background.
ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) features mid-sized committees dedicated to tackling critical economic, social, and environmental issues essential for global development. These committees provide an opportunity for delegates to engage in deep, collaborative debates within a smaller, more focused setting. This year, YMUNE will introduce a "Transition" ECOSOC committee, integrating elements of crisis and specialized committees to offer delegates a dynamic, fast-paced debate experience within the familiar framework of traditional Model UN. This will be an opportunity for intermediate delegates to become familiar with specialized/crisis committee formats and challenge themselves.
SPECIALIZED AND REGIONAL BODIES
Specialized and regional bodies incorporate an innovative style of committee, each small-to-medium sized with its own unique focus. Featuring both traditional and non-traditional UN committees, the structure of the committee makes for lively debate, nuanced points of view, and innovative resolutions to some of the most pressing world issues. According to the vision of each director leading the committee, the topics in these organs can be either fictional or nonfictional, thus inviting creative and more experienced delegates.
CRISIS COMMITTEES
Crisis committees are fast-paced and innovative, focused on creative problem solving, as delegates are required to develop solutions to the problem at hand using both their own resources and the resources of others in a collaborative manner. Due to its small size, the organ welcomes more experienced delegates who are comfortable with leading the debate and adapt quickly to the rapidly changing situation inside committee.
Integrated PRESS CORPS
This year, YMUNE will feature our own Integrated Press Corps, which will feature media representatives who will gather updates in their assigned committee and write articles to be published in our YMUNE newsletter. Integrated Press Corps delegates will also have access to an exclusive journalism workshop/training to help them gain insight into the career.
